Reynolds Journalism Institute Announces Non-Residential Fellowship

The Reynolds Journalism Institute has announced the addition of a non-residential component to its fellowship program for the 2013-2014 session. The non-residential fellowship was created alongside the existing residential fellowship to add flexibility for applicants.

This new component encourages professionals who want to develop an idea while continuing to work at their company/organization. Ideally this would provide a direct benefit to the fellow’s company and a clear path for implementation.

In addition to the non-residential fellowship, the residential fellowship allows fellows to spend time on the University of Missouri campus. The opportunity provides access to RJI’s and Mizzou’s numerous intellectual, marketing and technological resources.

Call for Submissions

The Donald W. Reynolds Fellowship gives fellows the opportunity to devote eight months to intense thinking, research and experimentation with the goal of advancing the practice of journalism in important ways.

RJI invites proposals from people who have innovative ideas to improve the practice or understanding of journalism. Because of the current acute financial challenges to supporting quality journalism, RJI is particularly interested this year in ideas on how to connect citizens with news and advertising more efficiently, to grow revenues, to engage communities or to ensure that the industry is taking full advantage of new and emerging technologies. But any proposals that offer the hope of strengthening the journalism-democracy relationship are welcome.

The fellowship invites applications from individuals inside and outside the media industry who want to spend the next school year working with RJI developing new knowledge and new possibilities to enhance journalism practice. The fellowship generally accepts between four and seven fellows each year.

Consideration of applications will begin February 15, 2013. Learn more and apply.

About the Reynolds Journalism Institute

RJI was launched in 2004 with a grant of $31 million from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation. In conjunction with the centennial celebration of the Missouri School of Journalism, RJI’s headquarters were opened in September 2008.

This 50,000 square-foot facility on the University of Missouri campus has state-of-the-art resources to test and demonstrate new technologies, experiment with new approaches to producing, designing and delivering news, information and advertising, and to host conferences that can be live-streamed around the world.

RJI’s work crosses diverse specialties within journalism, including media convergence, editorial content and methods, the evolution of advertising, innovation in management and the impact of new technologies. It also includes varied fields on campus such as law, computer science, marketing, education and other disciplines.
