Apply Now for the Platypus Santa Fe Digital Video Storytelling Workshop

The Platypus Digital Video Storytelling Workshop is now accepting applications for its training in Santa Fe, New Mexico this May. The Platypus Workshop 2013: Digital Video Storytelling A 21st century digital storyteller has to be producer, writer, camera, sound, editor, and everything else. Just as the millennia-old platypus—a mash-up of otter, duck and beaver—has evolved and survived, so must the modern photojournalist. In this workshop you learn how to be a digital storyteller using DSLR cameras, compact lights, wireless microphones, and professional editing software. You learn how to find a story, how to interview, how to shoot video sequences that keep your audience enthralled, and how to edit it all together. The workshop is led by one of the icons of photojournalism, Dirck Halstead, formerly TIME Magazine's Senior White House photographer. August Digital Journalist now online

This month's Digital Journalist leads off with a feature on Seamus Murphy's recent book, "A Darkness Visible," exploring almost 15 years of work in Afghanistan. The work is intimate and personal, looking at the culture of the Afghan people, not just the destruction of war. When asked why he did not write a lengthy essay for the book, Murphy responded: "I really don't have a message—I am probably as much in search of answers. What drives me is to shoot what interests me and to find out how life is for all of us. In that there may well be messages of humanism and my belief in the ultimate goodness of the vast majority of people—but it is not a conscious subtext." Murphy's gallery is definitely worth spending some time in. Other features this month look at the Death of Photojournalism, News Aggregators, and a great article on Networking and creating a…

April Digital Journalist – Special Video Journalism Issue

This month's Digital Journalist mixes things up a bit- Ken Kobré (of kobreguide.com), took over the reins, and focused on the ever-changing world of video journalism. They lead with a feature by Colin Mulvany, of The Spokesman-Review, From Stills to Video in the Newsroom. Mulvany writes: "Now is not a time to be timid. Multimedia producers need to stand up and protect video storytelling at their newspapers. In order to stay competitive, publishers will have to refocus their efforts back on their online operations. Newspaper Web sites will not flourish if the content is just repurposed from their print products. Multimedia, in the form of Web-only video, audio slideshows, and photo galleries, is most successful when it is integrated with text. This powerful combination gives newspaper online viewers far more depth and context than they can get from any other media." This issue also includes several great columns, including 10 Tips for…

March Digital Journalist now online

The March Digital Journalist is now online.  This month features Anthony Suau's feature on The Housing Meltdown.  You've probably seen his World Press Photo winning image of the police detective clearing a house, but the rest of the series is definitely worth a look, it's a very powerful take on what's going on in towns across the country right now. Of covering the story with detective Robert Kole, Suau says: "I was on edge each time we approached a home over the next day and a half I rode with him – I always wondered what emotion we would find next. Between evictions he took me to streets on which every home was closed as a result of foreclosures. I worked the streets of crack houses and boarded up complexes as he stood closely by. "Don't even think of coming here on your own," he told me as we pulled away." Lots…

February Digital Journalist now online

"I have been a photojournalist for the past 25 years, and have had the incredible opportunity to witness many of the worlds’ defining moments of modern history; the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of Communism in Eastern Europe in 1989; the end of apartheid in South Africa and Nelson Mandela walking out of prison in 1991; and most of the worlds’ conflicts of the past three decades. When our bus pulled into Maryland, on the eve of the inauguration, I knew after hearing the words of my fellow passengers, in some sense fellow pilgrims, that I was in the midst of a moment of history like maybe no other in terms of its historic magnitude, that I had ever witnessed and certainly not in America." ~ Peter Turnley The February issue of The Digital Journalist is now online.  This month features some great inauguration pieces, including a gallery, posts…
