Cardiff University Now Offering Computational Journalism Masters Program

In September, Cardiff University will introduce a new Computational Journalism Master's degree in an effort to supply the industry with more journalists with coding abilities. The United Kingdom-based school was motivated to offer the new program after various professionals in the digital journalism field expressed a need for graduates with skill sets that straddle the fields of journalism and computing. Cardiff joins US colleges, like Columbia University, who have launched similar programs. This area "doesn't replace traditional journalism," Richard Sambrook, a professor of journalism at Cardiff University told Journalism.co.uk. "But there is a market now for people able to code and understand core principles of journalism as well." And for those with an entrepreneurial edge, gaining such skills can support their quest to explore new ideas or ventures, he added, as "the industry is wide open to that at the moment". Knight Digital Media Center looking for News Entrepreneurs and Newsroom Leaders for Upcoming Workshops

If you're looking for professional training opportunities, the Knight Digital Media Center has a couple of great programs coming up. The News Entrepreneur Boot Camp is designed for 20 competitively selected digital entrepreneurs with great ideas for community news and information initiatives in the public interest. The boot camp will be held May 16-21, at USC Annenberg. Deadline for applications is February 19, 2010. The Transformative Leadership Institute is looking for people who are already positioned as the new leaders of news and information in the community interest. They are looking for leaders from major established news organizations that are transforming themselves and also for news entrepreneurs who are reinventing models for news and information. International Bridges to Justice (IBJ) looking for interns

For any students out there looking for opportunities to travel and create meaningful work this summer, IBJ has a couple of openings? 1. DOCUMENTARY WRITING/FILM/PHOTO INTERNSHIP IN BURUNDI, CAMBODIA, CHINA, INDIA, OR ZIMBABWE. International Bridges to Justice (IBJ) is again seeking aspiring journalists, photographers or filmmakers who can document the work of legal aid lawyers in Burundi, Cambodia, China, India or Zimbabwe. Working closely with IBJ staff in those countries, aspiring journalists will have the opportunity to document, film or photograph the cases of ordinary people, lost or forgotten by their criminal justice systems and often times the victims of torture or arbitrary detainment. During the preliminary stages of the project, the writer, film- or photo-journalist will shadow the defenders as they work with clients and meet with security personnel.
