NPPA Revamped: New Resources for Visual Journalists

It's been an exciting month for the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) with the launch of their new brand and website and a revamped News Video Workshop announced this month. According to NPPA, the 66-year-old organization began their rebranding process in 2008 when they realized, although they had begun equipping and supporting their members' work in new media, they needed to do a better job of communicating these efforts and offerings to their members. As NPPA president Sean D. Elliot said in his address to the NPPA Board last January, “We may still have some work to do convincing visual journalists that we have moved beyond print, but the mission of the NPPA is not tied to the printed page.” Their new branding package, designed in collaboration with Journey Group, of Charlottesville, VA "reflects the concepts of motion and community," and loosely represents a camera lens, according to NPPA. MediaStorm 2013 Workshop Dates Announced

We are excited to be entering into our sixth training year at MediaStorm. Each year our workshops attract leading industry professionals looking to advance their multimedia and storytelling skills. We've now had more than 100 participants come through our professional workshops and we continue to be humbled by how much they take away from the experience. John Temple, now managing editor at the Washington Post, told us that our Methodology Workshop gave him, "time to stop and step into a different way of seeing journalism." He said, "I came away inspired by what's possible if we commit to a different way of thinking about stories." Applications Open for WKU Mountain Workshops

Western Kentucky University’s (WKU) Mountain Workshops draw a team of dedicated teachers and determined learners to a small Kentucky town to explore the richness of community, the beauty of landscape, and the possibilities and challenges of visual storytelling. The 37th annual Workshops will take place Oct. 16-21, 2012 in Henderson, KY. Early registration ends on Sept. 15. The Mountain Workshops are three workshops in one. Participants can select from one of the three to suit their current need of visual development: The Photojournalism Workshop focuses on still photography, as coaches and participants explore individual character, the give and take of relationships, the deeply-felt sense of belonging to a place and the pride of participating in a shared heritage. The Picture Editing Workshop draws on the design sensibilities and electronic publishing expertise of its coaches to help participants learn to weave photographs and text together into memorable narratives. New MediaStorm Advanced Multimedia Workshop Projects Launched, Additional Workshop Dates Added

From March 6-12, 2010, we held our sixth MediaStorm Advanced Multimedia Reporting Workshop. Three teams of talented professionals, along with MediaStorm Producer Eric Maierson and guest producers Scott Anger and Rick Gershon, conceived, reported, and produced the following projects: Take Care by Gillian Laub, Henrik Björnsson, Elena Ghanotakis, and Laura Varma Virginia Gandee's brilliant red hair and dozen tattoos belie the reality of this 22-year-old's life. Inside her family's Staten Island trailer her caregiving goes far beyond the love she has for her daughter. Close to Home by Mary Beth Meehan, Michele Asselin and Maria Finitzo Roxanne Pickering is a Brooklyn resident bound by family and economics to live near the Gowanus Canal, a polluted waterway recently declared an EPA superfund site. Johnnie Footman: New York City's 90-year-old Cabbie by Jan Johannessen and Charlotte Oestervang Johnnie Footman, 90, may be the oldest cabbie in New York City. His age limits his time…

MediaStorm’s Multimedia Stimulus Plan

Given the tough economic climate and the critical need for multimedia training, MediaStorm will be holding a one-time, tuition-free Advanced Multimedia Reporting Workshop, in Brooklyn, NY from June 20-26, 2009. The MediaStorm Advanced Multimedia Workshops are designed for multimedia storytellers who want to get to the next level. It is not an introductory course. Students are responsible for their own travel, room and board. Reporters are expected to have a high level of competency with still photography, and be familiar with audio and video techniques. Editors are expected to be comfortable in Final Cut Pro. We only have spots for 8 participants as Multimedia Reporters, Editors or Observers so we are expecting a competitive process.
