The Evolution of Video Storytelling Featuring MediaStorm and DCTV

This week Futures Lab, with a little help from Brian Storm, founder and executive producer of MediaStorm, and John Alpert, co-founder and co-executive director of the Downtown Community Television Center in New York, explores how the proliferation of mobile apps and devices impacts visual journalism. The two veteran storytellers share insights about the place of micro-video via apps like Vine and Instagram and the challenges of funding quality work. In the midst of a changing industry and constant innovation, one principle remains: a good story is at the center of everything they do. MediaStorm Presents: The Girls of Gashora

Gashora Girls Academy in Rwanda educates the country’s most talented girls in science and technology, preparing them for college, and empowering them to become future leaders. In 2013, they graduated their pioneer class. Girls of Gashora documents the days prior to this celebration. MediaStorm was commissioned by the Harbers Family Foundation and the Rwanda Girls Initiative to create a film that would illustrate the desires and caliber of students at the Gashora Girls Academy as well as inspire potential donors to take action in support of their mission. Read our case study to learn more about how we tackled this challenge. Here are girls who have faced seemingly enormous obstacles in order to receive a first-class education and the hope of making their families, and their country, proud. These are the stories of Gashora. MediaStorm Guide to Creating Effect Presets in Premiere Pro CC

Reader Filip Lein asks, “I would love to be able to make custom effects like I had in FCP7…How can one make those please?”

Saving custom effects in Premiere Pro CC is easy but not obvious.

First, add an effect to a clip by doing the following:

  1. Search for the effect in Effects window (Shift–7).

  2. Drag the effect on to your timeline clip.

  3. Change the effect parameters by first clicking the clip in the timeline then opening the Effect Controls window (Shift–5). You may need to twirl down the disclosure triangle to see all of its options.

Once the effect is set to your specifications, right-click the name and choose Save Preset.
