WAR DANCE now showing

For the last two decades, the people of northern Uganda have been dealing with unthinkable conflict and hardship. War Dance is the story of one group of children, from the Patongo refugee camp, who overcome intense personal experiences to join together and qualify to compete, along with 20,000 other schools, in the National Music Competition, in Kampala. War Dance is now showing in a few theatres across the country, including (in NYC) Lincoln Plaza Cinemas and also the Angelika Film Center (where free tickets are being given out for the 7:40 and 10:00pm shows this evening, courtesy of HSBC).

Voodoo by Les Stone on the Digital Journalist

Photojournalist Les Stone has covered conflict and major stories for over 20 years. He has spent time in Iraq, Israel, Kosovo, Cambodia, and many other places, and has returned time and time again to Haiti, where he has covered everything from violent political uprisings to his work on the Voodoo culture, which is featured in this month's Digital Journalist. PF Bentley takes viewers deeper into the story, in a documentary video talking with Les about his work in Haiti, and his life at his place in the Catskills.

Poynter Institute Seminars & The Stan Kalish Picture Editing Workshop

The Poynter Institute will be kicking off the new year with a series of audio and multimedia based seminars. In January, they are offering Online Storytelling with Audio and Images. February brings Multimedia Journalism for Every Craft. In March, the Poynter staff teams up with the folks from The Stan Kalish Workshop to host Digital Photo Editing: Print to Motion/Motion to Print. Deadline for the first Poynter seminar is November 26, so don't delay. For those interested in attending both the Poynter Digital Photo Editing seminar and the Stan Kalish Picture Editing Workshop, they are offering a special $100 off deal if you register for both. Ashley Gilbertson- Whiskey Tango Foxtrot and NPR Interview

Photojournalist Ashley Gilbertson has spent considerable time in Iraq, and even more time dealing with the aftermath. NPR's Alex Chadwick spoke with Gilbertson his experiences and the changes he found in himself after returning home. They also discuss Gilbertson's new book, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, a collection of images and commentary from his time in Iraq.

Frontline Club Event- Is it over for Frontline Reporting?

The Frontline Club is hosting an event, along with VII Photo Agency, to discuss the issues confronting journalists reporting from the frontlines. The talk will be held on Tuesday, November 13, at 7pm, at Powerhouse Arena in Brooklyn. Speakers will include Jon Lee Anderson, Robert Fisk, Fran Unsworth, Chuck Lustig, Ron Haviv, and Ghaith Abdul-Ahad. A tribute to photojournalist Alexandra Boulat is also planned, following the talk. The program is free, with registration online at the Frontline Club's website.
