POV Hackathon

POV (Point of View), the award-winning independent documentary series celebrating its 25th anniversary on PBS this year, is reaching out to documentary filmmakers who have projects at any stage of production for the first POV Hackathon, taking place Saturday-Sunday, Aug. 11-12, 2012, in New York City. The weekend is an opportunity for filmmakers with a digital vision to work with developers and designers to create a finished prototype — be it a mobile site, web app, widget, game or something we've never seen before — for the web. Philippine Revolution Revisited

Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist Kim Komenich recently launched Revolution Revisited, an online presentation dedicated to the 1986 Philippine revolution and its relevance today. Revolution Revisited presents 13 multimedia stories of Filipinos—from field workers to government officials—that Komenich photographed in 1986 and 2011. It also serves as an entry point for Filipinos that were photographed by Komenich in the 1980s to connect with him in his effort to learn more about the people and revolution he photographed more than 25 years ago. Komenich took more than 28,000 photos between 1984 and 1986 during four extended assignments to the Philippines for the San Francisco Examiner. During this time he photographed the four-day People's Power Revolution that ousted dictator Ferdinand Marcos and brought Corazon Aquino to power. Crisis Guide: Iran Receives Overseas Press Club Award for Online Excellence

Crisis Guide: Iran produced by MediaStorm and the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) received the 2011 Overseas Press Club (OPC) award for Web: Online General Excellence. The OPC awards have been recognizing online journalism since the 1940s and this year they added six new categories for online coverage to acknowledge the changing media landscape. Crisis Guide: Iran was honored for its superb use of multimedia in a timely and in-depth study of Iran’s politics, economy and nuclear program. The seven-chapter publication was recognized for using interactive graphics, archival slideshows, graphs, timelines and video interviews to showcase the history and government of the country in a visually pleasing and accessible way. A Darkness Visible: Afghanistan Receives Media for Liberty Award

Liberty Media Corporation honored A Darkness Visible: Afghanistan by VII Photographer Seamus Murphy and MediaStorm last week as the winner of its 2012 Media for Liberty Award. The 2012 Media for Liberty Award acknowledges and encourages media contributions that explore the relationship between economic and political liberty. The winning entry is selected by a panel of judges and receives an award of $50,000. A Darkness Visible: Afghanistan is based on 14 trips to Afghanistan between 1994 and 2010 by internationally-recognized photojournalist Seamus Murphy.
