W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund launches new website

The W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund unveiled its newly revamped Website today at www.smithfund.org. The portal, redesigned by MediaStorm — incorporating the MediaStorm Player — provides an expanded selection of work from the 33 past recipients of the grant as well as easier site navigation, streamlined online registration for grant applicants, and thumbnail histories of photojournalist W. Eugene Smith, the fund itself, and the Howard Chapnick grant. (The deadline for the 2011 grant has been extended to Friday, June 3rd.) The W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography--considered by many to be the most prestigious, long-standing honorarium for completion of a photojournalistic project--was created in 1979, a year after Smith’s death. The grant’s mission is to support and encourage photographers producing humanistic photo stories in the tradition of the legendary American photo essayist who sought to expose the truth about issues affecting and afflicting humankind. Upcoming MediaStorm workshop and training opportunities

If you've been thinking of spending your summer learning some new multimedia skills, we have several opportunities coming up for you. We will be holding an Advanced Multimedia Workshop from July 23-29 at our office in Brooklyn, NY. Application deadline is May 27 (one week from today). If you're interested in a hands-on workshop where you'll work with a team to conceive, plan, report and produce a multimedia story in one week, you should consider applying for this workshop. MediaStorm Multimedia Workshop launches The Amazing Amy

From March 5-11, 2011, a team of four multimedia journalists collaborated with the MediaStorm team at our MediaStorm Multimedia Workshop. Participants spent a week reporting, editing, and producing The Amazing Amy. The Amazing Amy by Terje Bringedal, Torsten Kjellstrand, Espen Rasumssen, and Finn Ryan Using humor and a love of fantasy, "The Amazing Amy" connects with audiences through performing strenuous yoga-based contortion acts in New York City. Job Opening: Video/Multimedia Producer at American Progress

American Progress is seeking a Video/Multimedia Producer to lead the creation and distribution of video and other multimedia products. Coordinating the work of a videographer and interactive designer, the producer will work with policy experts and website editors to turn American Progress policy initiatives and messaging into compelling video, audio, and interactive graphics; distribute them to intended audiences through multiple channels; and demonstrate a measurable impact. The position requires a passion for progressive politics and policy, strong news judgment, superb scriptwriting skills, solid video editing, and expertise in online marketing and video distribution.
