W. Eugene Smith Fund Call for Entries 2017

The W. Eugene Smith Fund announced it is now accepting applications for its 38th annual Grant in Humanistic Photography. Since presenting its first grant in 1980, the Fund has awarded more than one million dollars to exemplary photographers whose works, created in the tradition of Eugene Smith, have brought light to contemporary issues that call for compassion and attention. The Smith Fund also announced it will increase its annual grant to $35,000, beginning this year. Photographers interested in learning more about the grant and fellowship, and submitting an application should visit SmithFund.org. The deadline for submitting applications is May 31, 2017. Tim Hetherington Trust Announces its Awardees

The Tim Hetherington Trust is proud to announce the winner of the Visionary Award 2017, which this year the judges have awarded to OMAR IMAM for completion of his innovative project “Syrialism”.  Described by some as “documentary Surrealism” Omar creates conceptual portraits of a carefully constructed cross section of the Syrian diaspora including pro and anti government voices, Jihadists and pacifists, professionals and artisans and many others who are represented in ways that reflect their perspectives and experiences.  Omar is primarily focused on challenging Syrian self perceptions in ways that provoke enlightened awareness of the broader Syrian condition, and secondarily offers a window through which other cultures can watch and learn about the Syrian experience since the onset of civil war in 2011. Join Lynn Johnson for a conversation on the selfie and its place in an increasingly interconnected world on April 26 at the Mitchell Park Community Center in Palo Alto. The talk will reflect on the question: how does our selfie obsession connect us with one another as we are challenged to hold our ground in empathy, tolerance and inclusion? This talk will be moderated by Brian Storm and is part of the Palto Alto Photo Gallery Lecture Series, an organization that aims to foster conversations in visual storytelling.
