37th Annual Eugene W. Smith Funds Awards

The W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund Grant, selected from over 300 worldwide submissions, is presented annually to photographers whose work carries forward the tradition practiced by Eugene Smith during his 45-year photojournalism career. The grant enables recipients to undertake and complete worthy photojournalistic projects. This year's ceremony will be held on Thursday, October 13, at 7pm at the School of Visual Arts Theater in New York City. For more information and to RSVP, please click here. This annual event honors one of the greatest photojournalists in the history of photography and also honors those who continue to tell the stories of the human spirit and condition from around the world.  If you love photography, or have an appreciation for the power and impact photography has on society, you will want to be here.

Worth Watching #153: Stories of Human Kind: A Search for Home

We are confronted with daily assaults of tragedy in the news–stories of war, migration, and the never-ending election cycle. But rarely do these stories give us the a way to connect, to empathize, and to reimagine our own world. Senain Kheshgi’s new series of short films on the lives of people living in Templehof Refugee Camp in Berlin allows us to do just that. Stories of Human Kind: A Search for Home is a partnership with Save the Children, Johnson & Johnson, and Facebook, and will be distributed by Facebook to over 55 million feeds in the next few weeks. On the series’ launch, Senain says “There are now more than 65 million people forcibly displaced around the world - we must remember to see them as individuals: nurses, small business owners, students - all seeking safety and security.” Thank you Senain for making these powerful stories come to life. Artist Reception | The Distance Between Us by Christopher Capozziello

From the photographer: Sixteen years ago I began making the first pictures of my twin brother Nick. Since then the photographs and text have been published nationally and internationally, they've been shared in group and solo exhibitions domestically and abroad, the book was published three years ago, and now it’s on view, for the first time at a museum as a solo exhibition. The photographs will be up until October 2. Please join us for the Artist Reception on Saturday, September 17, 2016, at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum [625 Williams Street New London, CT 06320] (wine, water, and hors d'oeuvres provided).
