Why it’s worth it to buy decent gear

We get questions almost daily from people interested in shooting/producing multimedia projects, wondering what they need to buy to do it well.  We have a suggested gear list on our website, but a lot of people come back with, "Wow, that all costs a lot.  What are some good, cheap options?"  MediaStorm Producer Bob Sacha offers his thoughts on why it really is worth it to go all in: Everyone wants to buy the smallest lightest video camera because we’re already carrying a lot of gear. But be careful not to short change yourself. Most of the palm-sized video cameras make it difficult or impossible to access basic controls like ISO and Gain and most do not allow an external microphone. The MediaStorm Workshops present: An Apollo Legend

The second MediaStorm Advanced Multimedia Reporting Workshop recently wrapped up, and we are excited to present their project: An Apollo Legend by Ricky Montalvo, Bernadette Tuazon, & Evan Vucci. At the Apollo Theater, the audience is judge and jury for the hundreds of eager performers who come to Amateur Night at the Apollo each year. Some make it, many don't, all become part of the legend of the Apollo. See the project. Bearing Witness: Five Years of the Iraq War

Reuters and MediaStorm collaborated to create Bearing Witness: Five Years of the Iraq War, launched to coincide with the war's 5th anniversary. The site features profiles of three Reuter's journalists who have more than 23 years combined experience reporting and photographing in Iraq. Reuters video, photography, info-graphics and journalists are showcased in this 5 chapter interactive application created from more than 20 hours of video footage and images selected from 3,600 of the best of Reuters photographs -- some published here for the first time. Additional chapters include a timeline of the Iraq War made up of 223 still images and 15 videos, and five maps drawn from dozens of pages of data.
