Cardiff University Now Offering Computational Journalism Masters Program

In September, Cardiff University will introduce a new Computational Journalism Master's degree in an effort to supply the industry with more journalists with coding abilities. The United Kingdom-based school was motivated to offer the new program after various professionals in the digital journalism field expressed a need for graduates with skill sets that straddle the fields of journalism and computing. Cardiff joins US colleges, like Columbia University, who have launched similar programs. This area "doesn't replace traditional journalism," Richard Sambrook, a professor of journalism at Cardiff University told Journalism.co.uk. "But there is a market now for people able to code and understand core principles of journalism as well." And for those with an entrepreneurial edge, gaining such skills can support their quest to explore new ideas or ventures, he added, as "the industry is wide open to that at the moment".
