Call For Entries: 2016 Alexia Professional Grant

The Alexia Foundation is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for its 2016 Professional Grant. The deadline for submissions for the Professional Grant is 2 p.m. Jan. 31, 2016. The Student Grant application will open Feb. 3, 2016 with the deadline at 2 p.m. on March 3, 2016. The Professional Grant Winner will receive $20,000 to help produce his or her proposed project. The goal of The Alexia Foundation Grants is to give voice to those who go unheard, foster cultural understanding and expose social injustice. The strength of the proposal will be judged equally to photographic skills. The grants go to those who clearly and concisely propose significant projects that share in the Foundation’s mission and who also submit photographic or motion materials that reflect the ability to execute the proposed project. ViewFind Unveils Funding for New Visual Stories on Race and Ethnic Identity

ViewFind, a new social platform for visual stories, announced their inaugural Visual Storytelling Grants today, offering $5,000 to three photojournalists to explore the themes of racial, ethnic and cultural identity around the world. The ViewFind editorial team selected the theme of race and ethnic identity because they saw a need for more visual voices on some of the most pivotal issues facing the world today, including the protests against police violence in Ferguson, Missouri and the ongoing migration crisis across the Mediterranean. “We chose the theme of race because, well... how could we not?” said ViewFind Editorial Director Thea Breite, who helped establish the grants. “We have an opportunity and a responsibility to fund work that adds to important dialogue about these issues.” The grants will be awarded to photojournalists who submit their work for consideration via the ViewFind platform. From 7-9pm young women, ages 15 to 22, prepare for a night of work at the Violin Karaoke bar in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Their job is to sell drinks to customers who book the karaoke rooms; in the neighboring dance club, also part of the Violin, there are cocktail waitresses. However, many are also freelance sex workers or ‘bar girls’ who make their own arrangements with the customers for a ‘date.’ Most of the customers are asian; they are either Thai, Korean, Chinese, or Japanese. The grant will provide a $25,000 grant for a project to be produced on a significant issue involving and affecting women. Open Society Opens Call for 2014 Audience Engagement Grant

The Open Society Documentary Photography Project is soliciting calls for the 2014 Audience Engagement Grant Program, a funding opportunity for photographers documenting a human rights or social justice issue to enact change. Deadline to apply is July 8th, 2014.

Description

Beginning this year, two tracks of support will be offered to individuals at different phases of their Audience Engagement Projects:

  • Track One: Project Development – Grantees will receive funding to attend an Open Society–organized retreat in December of 2014. This event will be designed in collaboration with Creative Capital’s Professional Development Program. Attendees will become part of a larger Audience Engagement Grant cohort, with opportunities to connect both during the conference and after.
  • Track Two: Project Implementation – Grantees will receive funding to execute (or continue executing) their projects as well as attend December’s retreat.
