For over 30 years, the International Center for Photography (ICP) has celebrated the leading image-makers in various categories through the Infinity Awards. Harbers Studios commissioned MediaStorm, on behalf of ICP, to create a short documentary for each award-winner. The purpose of the films was to showcase the photographer and his or her work at the Infinity Awards event.

Client: Harbers Studios, International Center of Photography
Published: April 30, 2015

The Challenge
For this film, one of the main challenges was the language barrier. Both the producer and director of photography both spoke Spanish at an intermediate level, but were unsure if that would be enough to conduct the interview. They flew to Oaxaca City, Mexico to interview and film scenes with Graciela Iturbide.

The Solution
The producer conducted the interview with Graciela in Spanish, but thankfully, Graciela’s assistant was bilingual and sat-in on the interview to help with unfamiliar vocabulary. For editing, we hired a translator to transcribe the interview in Spanish, using timecode to mark the beginning of each new sentence. Each sentence was then translated to English, keeping the timecode consistent with the Spanish transcript. From there, we used the English translation to script the film, and the timecodes to locate the quotes we needed.

The Results
The films were shown on April 30, 2015 at the 2015 International Center of Photography’s Infinity Awards in New York and launched online on May 1, 2015.
