Anssi Männistö

Anssi Männistö is a senior lecturer of visual journalism in the School of Media, Communication and Theatre (CMT) at the University of Tampere, Finland. CMT is the only provider of photojournalism programs at the university level in Finland.

From 2003 onwards Männistö has been in charge of the B.A. program and has taught extensively in the M.A. program. During the academic year 2013-2014 he supervises those programs as the acting professor.

Throughout his career Männistö has been actively studying the new and emerging areas of visual journalism. In 2005 he started to work with advanced mobile phones. He has led several courses in mobile journalism using the latest camera phones. In 2009 he started separate courses in audio slideshows and web videos. Since then he has produced approximately 90 works in those courses.

From 1985 until 2004 Männistö worked as a freelance photographer and writer. His photographs were published in several Finnish magazines and newspapers covering mainly rock music and culture. He worked also for many record companies.

In 2000 Männistö received Ph.D. in political science while studying media images of Muslims and Islam during the Cold War era. After that Männistö has made research in many areas of visual journalism. His latest studies have focused on the use of web videos is newspapers and the visuality of tablet journalism.

Besides curriculum teaching he gives further education courses for journalists, photographers and teachers in various areas of visual journalism.
