Ellen Thommesen

16: June 2015

Ellen Thommesen has a unique role as the multimedia producer in a Communications Department for a public school district. She is currently the Marketing and Media Specialist for Harrison School District 2 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She is responsible for communicating the mission and successes of Harrison to the public. She utilizes photography, video, social media and traditional media to spread the news about this innovative school district.

Ellen earned a Bachelor of Journalism from the Missouri School of Journalism at the University of Missouri – Columbia with an emphasis in Photojournalism. She has experience in non-profit marketing, newspaper photography, reporting, and multimedia production. A recipient of a Hearst Journalism Award for multimedia in 2012, she is always looking to improve her visual storytelling skills and bring journalistic elements to her work in marketing.

A St. Louis native, Ellen moved to Colorado after college to join the Adaptive Sports Center as a Marketing Intern in Crested Butte, and found her to way to Colorado Springs shortly thereafter. Her experiences in Colorado have strongly influenced her professional and personal goals. She hopes to grow as a multimedia storyteller and continue to serve organizations with positive impacts and missions, as well as pursue her personal goals in mountain biking, climbing, hiking, running, traveling and spending as much time as humanly possible with her friends and family.

This workshop was a refresher course, a learning course and an inspirational week all in one. Highlighting best practices and methods for interviews, filming, workflow, post-production and more for multimedia storytelling were incredibly helpful for me. I took a lot of practical knowledge back to my position in Public Relations, as well as a huge dose of inspiration when it comes to marketing through storytelling. If you are looking to start your own multimedia company, this is a great week to get an in-depth look at a very successful organization. Brian Storm is generous in all senses of the word, and a great leader of a company that is paving the way in multimedia storytelling.
