Long Bio:

Kimberley Porteous is the multimedia editor at The Sydney Morning Herald, where she works with photographers, reporters, video producers and Flash designers to create news multimedia packages, audio slideshows and the occasional video report. She also trains her print colleagues in interviewing for audio and in multimedia storytelling.

Although she joined the online team in 2000, her true epiphany came in 2005 when she lived for a year in the US listening to NPR and "This American Life". She produced "The War of Ideas", which won Australia's top journalism prize, a Walkley Award, in 2006, and "Beyond a White Australia", which won a United Nations Media Peace Prize in 2007. Her recent project, "Exit Iraq", hasn't won anything.

Kimberley participated in the December 2008 MediaStorm Storytelling Workshop. She had the following to say about her experience:

Spending six days on a MediaStorm workshop was a career-changing experience. Where else can you finesse your multimedia storytelling skills with the absolute best in the business?

As good multimedia begins in the field, we were trained in the techniques to shoot video like the pros. Then in post-production we learned the best way to edit our footage to create slick and polished presentations. Exposure to the MediaStorm workflows and practices is invaluable, and provides you with a template to structure and manage future projects.

They're a fabulous team to work with, and incredibly generous with sharing their experience and expertise.

By the time I reluctantly left MediaStorm I was inspired beyond measure, and felt armed with the missing pieces of the puzzle to produce high-quality news multimedia productions.
