“My photography has gravitated towards trying to understand relationships between state power and its citizens,” says artist Matthew Connors. This study began at Zuccotti Park during the height of the Occupy Wall Street movement and ultimately took him to Cairo for the second anniversary of the Egyptian revolution. His collection of work from Egypt, "Fire in Cairo: Revisiting the Revolution in Egypt" is being honored by the International Center of Photography with an Infinity Award, in the category of Art.

Connors describes his work as existing between the worlds of reportage, surrealism and poetry. By blurring categories, and even altering photographs, Connors offers us a broader understanding of complex political situations.

    Goal

Since 1985, the International Center of Photography has recognized outstanding achievements in photography with its prestigious Infinity Awards. The awards ceremony is also ICP’s primary fundraising benefit, with its revenues assisting the center's various programs.

Harbers Studios commissioned MediaStorm, on behalf of ICP, to create a short film about each of the recipients to screen at the awards ceremony and to display online. The films pay tribute to the contributions of each artist to the craft and field of photography and demonstrate ICP's commitment to them.

    The Challenge

The primary challenge in producing this piece was a lack of video source material. Connors’ work at Zuccotti Park focused solely on portraiture. There was no other documentation of the Occupy Wall Street Movement.

    The Solution

Because this project necessitated seeing more of Occupy Wall Street activity, beyond Connors portraiture, it was necessary to license additional material. MediaStorm producers’ researched the archives of many news organizations and stock imagery houses in order to find the most compelling video available.

    The Results

The films were shown on April 11, 2015 at the 2016 International Center of Photography’s Infinity Awards in New York and launched online on April 12, 2016.

The films available here are the full-length pieces. We also created shorter versions to show at the awards ceremony.
