Since it’s inception in 2000, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, co-chaired by Melinda Gates, has established itself as the most powerful philanthropic organization in the world. With a focus on highly targeted campaigns backed by data tracking, the foundation has given $36.7 billion in grants; $4.2 billion in 2015 alone. The foundation has focused on global health and education within the United States for much of it’s history, and has, with Melinda Gate’s guidance, more recently taken on issues of gender equity. Melinda sees philanthropic work as inherently risky saying, “Our role is to take risks that, if they pay off, could give millions of people the chance to make the most of their lives. You can't just stand back and read the numbers, you have to feel and know those stories. You have to let your heart break in this work.”
