The primary goal of the workshop is to create an intimate, character-driven documentary with supporting interactive experiences powered by the MediaStorm Platform.
Participants will work directly with the MediaStorm team in the field, in the editing suite and via online sessions in a collaborative, educational environment.
This is a workshop for seasoned storytellers who have professional experience and are looking to further expand their storytelling capabilities.
Participants will be working at a fast-paced and professional level, moving from story concept to a completed story.
The goal of the workshop is to collaborate with those who have expert skills in specific areas in order to create the best possible project.
Applicants must also be able to work with others in a collaborative, team-oriented environment, and be willing to fulfill an assigned role.
Enrollment is limited. Teams are small with 2-5 participants and one or two observers at most.

Participants will focus primarily on reporting or editing, but will collaborate extensively and learn aspects of each skill during the workshop. Specific roles for the workshop include:
Visual Storyteller: Cinematographer and/or Still Photographer
Workshop participants who gather original material in the field using still photography, audio and video.
Audio Producer
Gather audio in the field in partnership with the visual storytellers.
Producer: Interview & Logistics
Workshop participants who interview the subject, organize the coverage logistics and are responsible for communicating with the subject.
Editor: Post Production
Workshop participants who assist MediaStorm editors in the post-production of a story. Editors will learn the MediaStorm post-production workflow methodology.
XR
Workshop participants who gather material in the field for distribution in immersive augmented and virtual reality experiences.
Motion Graphics
Workshop participants who create the motion graphics package including titles, credits and cinematic experiences.
Interactive Designer
Workshop participants who produce related interactive experiences using the MediaStorm Platform and/or custom code.
Observer
Workshop participants who have access to both the reporting and editing processes, but are not required to engage in hands-on work.
Documentarian
Workshop participants who will document the behind-the-scenes workshop experience and conduct participant interviews using stills and video for use in supplemental and educational features.
Tuition is $3,500.
The tuition fee covers pre planning meetings, a day of storytelling and toolset training, 7 days in person reporting and multiple online post production sessions.
The in-person portion of the workshop takes place in the Santa Cruz Mountains at MediaStorm’s headquarters in Los Gatos, CA.

The MediaStorm staff is dedicated to the team for the entire in-person workshop, and instructs and directs during the pre-planning, story-gathering and post-production phases of the project.
This workshop is designed to replicate intense and sometimes difficult reporting and editing situations. You will likely learn to make significant changes in your existing methods, from rethinking and refining your audio/visual gathering techniques to streamlining your post-production workflow and organization. You will be assigned to a team before the workshop and will collaborate with MediaStorm to work out logistics and work to finalize a story idea before the workshop begins. Participants are encouraged to pitch their own story ideas. Participants need to be flexible as stories can change as happens in all real life reporting experiences.

The schedule is subject to change but overall breaks into three stages:
Stage 1: Online Pre Planning and Training
We will have several online meetings before the in person reporting session to discuss our approach and story ideas. We will also have a full day of training via online video conference to share best practices.
Stage 2: In Person in Los Gatos, CA
We will start by meeting on Friday night for dinner, story discussion, gear review and logistics lock down. We will begin reporting on Saturday and break into post production mid week.
Stage 3: Online Post Production
It is highly unlikely that we will have a finished project by the end of the in-person workshop. MediaStorm will work to complete the project and participants can join via online video conference for the post workshop editing sessions. Note that post production takes a significant amount of time and the more sessions you can join after the stage 2 in person reporting process the more you will learn.

We will be reporting with an eye towards leveraging the power of the MediaStorm Platform. We will discuss the best way to report and package the story using film, slideshows, playlists, timelines and maps. Participants will get detailed training and an inside look at this innovative toolset.
MediaStorm has an established syndication model for our projects. It's possible that some of the projects created during the workshop will have value in the marketplace beyond the educational experience.
If we license a project, the revenue generated will be shared with 50% split between the workshop participants and 50% to MediaStorm.
Copyright to the original media assets created at the workshop will remain with the participants. MediaStorm maintains copyright to the completed project. The projects will be published on MediaStorm’s digital channels. The final cinematic and interactive product will be available for embed on your personal websites via the MediaStorm Platform Player embed code.

What gear will I need to bring?
We will be providing high-end Macintosh computers for the post-production workstations. Participants are required to bring their own photography, audio and video equipment. You should also bring your computer.
Each participant should also bring an external hard drive with at least 4TB of free space so they can take their individual assets home with them.
How are participants chosen?
Participants will be chosen based on the information provided in their applications. We are looking for people who will benefit the most from the training . Existing examples of high caliber projects are the most important criteria for selection.
How will teams be paired?
Once participants are chosen, we will be in touch with each individual to discuss team structure.
Do I have to apply for a specific role?
Applicants must select their primary choice of role. If you would consider a second and third choice role, please indicate that on the application form.
Where will participants stay?
Participants are responsible for their own room and board. We will provide local hotel and neighborhood information to accepted participants.
What if I need to cancel?
If you need to pull out of the workshop we’d like as much notice as possible. No refunds will be issued, but we will work with you to secure a spot in a future workshop.
Do you offer introductory workshops?
No. We feel there are already several terrific workshops offering introductory and intermediate instruction, so we are focusing exclusively on advanced training.
We do offer a One Day master classes and a more in depth Methodology master class.
