WSJ. Magazine 2018 Architecture Innovators: Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, have known each other for the better part of 60 years. Once childhood friends, they are now the principles of the firm Herzog & de Meuron. They have used their knowledge of one another’s strengths as a way to create some of the world’s most iconic buildings, including The Tate Modern in London, 56 Leonard St. in New York City, the National Stadium in Beijing, and the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.

Herzog and de Meuron approach each project without the burden of preconceived notions, choosing instead to address the individual challenges and uses of each building as they arise.

They sum up their philosophy as such “Architecture is for the people, and the people, they accept the building or they reject it. If people love them, admire them, they will survive.”

WSJ. Magazine 2018 Innovator Awards

Crafting a better future from a world in flux. This is the hallmark of WSJ. Magazine's 2018 Innovators—a group of visionary, foundation-shaking luminaries working across nine fields. This year's talents were honored at the annual Innovator Awards on November 7 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Selected by WSJ. Magazine editors, the honorees are: Ruth E. Carter (Design); David Chang (Food); Nonny de la Peña (Technology); Agnes Gund (Philanthropy); Jacques Herzog & Pierre de Meuron (Architecture); Jonah Hill (Film); Ralph Lauren (Fashion); John Legend (Entertainment); and Pheobe Waller-Bridge (TV).

MediaStorm, for the fourth consecutive year, produced short films that pay tribute to their talents; showcasing exactly why WSJ. Magazine named them Innovators.
