WSJ. Magazine 2018 Design Innovator: Ruth E. Carter, is an Academy Award nominee who has designed memorable costumes for over 30 years. Since her early iconic work with Spike Lee in films like Do the Right Thing, to her most recent work on the groundbreaking Ryan Coogler film Black Panther, Carter’s focus on the culture and storytelling behind each costume has earned her praise throughout the industry. Of her success, she says “If you understand the history of a culture and you present it in its glory, it's a celebration.”
Carter’s process centers on a deep dive into the history of each film and its location. Her office is full of drawings, images, clothing samples and historic periodicals. Ruth says, “Authenticity has a lot to do with honesty. And being authentic means that we're really going to get into research. Those types of authentic approaches to the work and respect for the history and the culture bring people in closer, they can relate to it.”
