The WSJ. Magazine 2016 Innovators are an outstanding group of individuals recognized for setting new ground in their fields. The innovators are honored at a red carpet gala at the Museum of Modern Art, and each awardees’ story is showcased in a video tribute by MediaStorm.
This year’s WSJ. Magazine 2016 Innovator Ai Weiwei is being recognized for his achievements in Art. Renowned Chinese political dissident Ai Weiwei has been using art as a medium for political activism since the 1970s, a time of turmoil and repression in his home country. He says “to have any kind of freedom has to come from struggle, so art is a way to struggle”. His art has expressed a range of political protest - from the HIV/AIDS crisis in New York to political silencing in China.
Today, he turns his critical eye to the global refugee crisis–his focus being Syrian refugees trying to gain entry to Europe. Juxtaposing the democratic ideals of the Continent with its reticence to entry, Ai Weiwei puts his unrelenting artists’ gaze in a part of the world that so many have simply forgotten.Client: WSJ.
