One-by-one, American casualties mount in Iraq, logged in official tallies and reported in the daily paper. Some four thousand soldiers have lost their lives in the conflict thus far. For each and every one, someone in this country is grieving.
In 2004, audio producer Zac Barr and photojournalist Andrew Lichtenstein set out to create a portrait that could reflect these losses. They traveled throughout the country, meeting families, attending funerals, and trying to get a sense of the wounds that are festering nationwide.
Never Coming Home is an intimate, tactile picture of what they found.
