Robert Gourley

21: December 2018

Robert Gourley is a documentary filmmaker and photojournalist based in Durham, NC, and is most interested in stories about how people interact with the environment. He first picked up a DSLR camera to document dolphins for marine biology research in 2014, and he has not stopped shooting since. Over the past several years, his work has been featured by outlets like the Los Angeles Times, Huffington Post and the PBS NewsHour. He recently won the Hearst College Awards National Championship in Multimedia, gold in the features category of CPOY and gold for documentary short in CPOY. Most recently, he was the 2018 summer video intern at the Los Angeles Times.

Robert participated in the December 2018 MediaStorm Methodology Master Class. He had the following to say about his experience:

This workshop offers a deep dive into all aspects of MediaStorm and the strategies they have used to become a successful, award-winning company. Each lesson offered inspiration. Each participant was involved in different aspects of the media industry, and the discussion was rich. The workshop gave me a roadmap to pursue compelling stories in a way that produces impact and is financially viable. I left feeling exited to implement what I had learned. As a cinematographer and editor, there were several specific lessons that have changed how I will film and edit moving forward.
