Samuel James (b. 1986) is a photographer, writer and teacher from Cincinnati, Ohio. He works in West Africa and throughout the United States, where most recently he has been exploring the impact of the global oil industry. For his photographs of the illicit fuel trade in the Niger Delta, he received the Overseas Press Club Olivier Rebbot Award, a Special Commendation from the Frontline Club and was nominated for an ASME National Magazine Award and the Visa d'Or. He received a 2013 Getty Images Editorial Grant to continue exploring the inequities surrounding land, water and oil in the delta. The British Journal of Photography named him "One of the 20 photographers to watch in 2013." Together with Gary Knight, he helped found the Program for Narrative & Documentary Practice at the Institute for Global Leadership at Tufts University in 2011, where he teaches non-fiction, narrative storytelling part of the year. He is a Contributing Artist at Harper's Magazine.
