Lucy Nicholson is a senior staff photographer with Reuters. She was born in London and is based in Los Angeles, having worked as a photographer in Mexico City, Chile, and Northern Ireland.
She photographs sporting events such as the Olympics, Super Bowl, NBA Finals, Stanley Cup hockey, World Series baseball, and U.S. Open tennis. She also covers news and features in Los Angeles and beyond.
She has been awarded for her sports photography twice in the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame contest, in the China International Press Photo contest, the PDN/Nikon Awards, and the Editor and Publisher's Photos of the Year Contest. Her multimedia video 'Homegirl cafe' was a 2011 Webby Awards honoree for Documentary: Individual Episode.
Nicholson participated in the May 2008 MediaStorm Storytelling Workshop. She had the following to say about her experience:
The MediaStorm Multimedia Workshop was inspiring. I came away feeling much more confident in my ability to create multimedia pieces. It was immense fun. The instructors are amongst the best multimedia producers in the business, and strike the right balance between throwing you in the deep end & stepping in at critical moments to rescue you. They sacrificed sleep with us to meet deadlines.
The workshop was really focused - we had very concise lectures on the essentials of video, audio, photography for multimedia packages and Final Cut Pro, and then went straight into the field as a team to apply the techniques.
I learnt a hell of a lot about story structure and how to gather media to support it. Learning audio and video is making me think about photography in a whole new way, and I'm excited about continuing the process.
Robert Burck couldn't get anyone to listen to his music, until he made a simple discovery. In One Man Brand, we meet a man who has transformed himself from a penniless outsider into one of the Big Apple's most visible attractions.
