I believe everyone has a story to tell, and that multimedia is the powerful means in which to report those stories using stills, audio and video. My years in print publishing have prepared me to embrace new media with the same commitment to great storytelling.
Throughout my career I have worked with some of the finest talent in journalism. As a picture editor, designer, art director and newsroom manager, I have proudly worked at the San Jose Mercury News, the St. Petersburg Times, The Sacramento Bee, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and The Boston Globe. During my tenure at the Times, the photo team was recognized with numerous awards for photography and editing in Pictures of the Year International, Best of Photojournalism and Society of News Design, including winning Picture Editing Team Portfolio in POYi.
At The Sacramento Bee, I was the picture editor and designer for “ A Mother’s Journey,” which won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize in feature photography and POYi’s World Understanding Award.
In 2010, I was awarded the Knight Fellowship in the School of Visual Communication at Ohio University in Athens, where I taught college-level courses and completed coursework for a master’s degree in multimedia and photography.
I am the current director of The Kalish Workshop, a hands-on seminar for visual editing and storytelling, and have served as faculty and on the advisory board member for 16 years.
I have taught and lectured at Poynter Institute, the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar and many NPPA related seminars and contests, as well as contest judge for POYi, BOP, SND and ASNE.
