Barbara Griffin’s passion for imagery and image making has informed her career, as evidenced through her work at TBS, Inc. telling the story of a global media company’s brands, programming and people through photography, creative direction and experiential branding. She develops and nurtures creative teams and has collaborated with some of the greatest photographers and directors of our time to create memorable images that connect people to iconic news and entertainment moments across the globe.
As Senior Vice President of Turner Broadcasting’s Image Management Department, Griffin provided the creative direction, design, production and assignment of photography and video that supported the marketing and communications outreach of the entire TBS, Inc. portfolio, including CNN, TNT, TBS, Cartoon Network and Turner Classic Movies. In addition, she oversaw the transformation of the Turner Photo Library into a global digital resource, which enabled the entire company to gain access to the full value of an eight-million-image collection that represents the extensive range of the company's assets and history.
Among the high-profile photo shoots conceived and executed under Griffin’s supervision are award-winning campaigns for programs including CNN's Anderson Cooper 360, Planet in Peril, Black in America, God's Warriors and Piers Morgan Tonight; Cartoon Network’s Level Up and Adventure Time; TNT’s Steven Spielberg productions of Into the West and Falling Skies; and other popular TNT and TBS series including, Dallas, The Closer, Rizzoli and Isles, Major Crimes, Southland and Conan, as well as photography promoting the Screen Actors Guild Awards on TBS/TNT and The Daytime Emmy Awards on HLN.
Griffin oversaw CNN’s photographic coverage of the 2012 Presidential Election; CNN Heroes; wars in Israel, Lebanon, Afghanistan and Iraq; the South Asia tsunami; Hurricane Katrina; the earthquake in Haiti; the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, the political uprising in Egypt and the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
Griffin joined Turner Broadcasting in 1991 from Premiere magazine, where she had been associate picture editor since 1988. Earlier in her career, she was a photo researcher and director of photo research for The Stock Market Photo Agency and was a picture cataloguer at Time, Inc. Griffin holds a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Alabama, with an emphasis in photography and a minor in art history and printmaking. A frequent lecturer on professional photography, she currently serves as Board President of Atlanta Celebrates Photography, Advisory Board Member of re:imagineATL, is a member of the High Museum’s Friends of Photography group, the International Center of Photography and Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. Additionally, she serves on TEDXAtlanta’s steering committee.
