I am a science communicator and visual journalist driven by a love of the ocean, curiosity in technology, and optimism in art.
My sister told me I learned to swim before I could walk. My father would let me play in the waterway as he worked on (and cussed at) his sailboat, figuring I’d get in less trouble in water than on land. Interaction with the ocean - surfing, diving, sailing, or fishing - has been an essence of my life from my early days in a small North Carolina coastal town.
One of my main goals in photography is to change people’s perceptions about their access and ability to connect with the water. I want the viewer to be inspired to be more comfortable in the water and be respectful of this divine resource.
It is becoming ever more critical that we redefine the expectations, limitations, and pressures humans are putting on the oceans. We often treat the oceans in attitudes based on fear, blatant disrespect, or ignorance. The construction of sea walls as if defending against a foe and the inordinate amount of waste dumped in the seas show an ignorance and deafened defiance.
Too many people think of bodies of water as stopping-points or opportunities for exploitation. I want to show they are actually portals to a connected world.
I want to develop visuals that are both story-telling and aesthetically pleasing - genuine moments of beauty that reveal the complexity of human and sea.
Currently I work with Schmidt Ocean Institute as their Creative Media Manager, where I drive and support story development for outreach across digital platforms by collaborating with field creatives and various Institute departments to promote open data, science, and other initiatives. I also serve as the primary assignment editor for visual assets, ensuring strong story development aligned with their communication strategy. I manage special projects, including both short and feature-length films, as well as interactive and in-person exhibits. My role includes contributing creative content to the development, expansion, and maintenance of the Institute’s websites, digital platforms, and programs. Additionally, I oversee the Institute's social media accounts, managing content creation, activities, and presence.
